The Franklin County Lady Lions’ fast-pitch softball team has played in the state championship game two years running – winning once, won last year’s Region 8AAA championship and made the state tournament 10 consecutive seasons.

Two preseason scrimmages scheduled for the Franklin County Lions football team have been scrapped. Georgia High School Association Executive Director Robin Hines cancelled preseason scrimmages Thursday after meeting with a health advisory council on Wednesday.

By Shane Scoggins Publisher and Beau Evans Capitol Beat News Service High school football in Georgia will start two weeks later than usual due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a vote Monday by the Georgia High School Association.
The Franklin County Lion baseball seniors were recognized before their final game at Jackson County in Jefferson last month. Their season, and the seasons of all spring sports athletes, ended Thursday when Gov. Brian Kemp closed schools for the rest of the school year.

A year ago, the Franklin County Lions were upset in the quarterfinals of the Region 8AAA tournament. The loss appeared to prevent the team from making the state tournament, until the team was chosen for the state’s one wild-card spot.

The Lions Den is expected to be packed Friday night for Franklin County basketball’s regular season finale against archrival Hart County. The rivalry will bring folks out, but both the boys and girls games will be key ones for seeding in the upcoming Region 8AAA tournament.

Franklin County Lady Lion Jayden Gailey has been named the Class AAA Softball Player of the Year for the second straight season. The Georgia Athletics Coaches Association released its All-State teams last week. The coaches from the region champions in AAA selected the teams.
