New Mountain home

By Charlie EavensonStaff Writer CARNESVILLE – The Mountain Education Charter High School’s Franklin Campus celebrated its new location at Franklin County High School with a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday.The Franklin County Chamber of Commerce helped sponsor the event.

BOE holds first tax hearing

By Shane ScogginsPublisher CARNESVILLE – The Franklin County Board of Education faced questions and heard concerns from a handful of citizens at the first of three public hearings on the proposed 2026-27 millage rate.
Franklin County Schools Support Person of the Year, Stephanie Martin, has been described as the glue that holds the place together and the person that makes sure everything runs smoothly. Martin worked  the past nine years as bookkeeper for the high school’s CTAE department but has recently transferred to South Franklin Elementary. ‘Super’ Martin honored as school system’s Support Person of Year

Rec director, coach to join forces to lead youth football team

By Shane ScogginsPublisher CARNESVILLE –  A dispute over coaching at the Franklin County Recreation Department appeared to be resolved Monday with a coach who said he had been banned from the sidelines agreeing to return as an assistant.
Tyler Matthews works with the kids in different classes at Lavonia Elementary School, helping teach English to the speakers of other languages (ESOL). For 12 of his 16 years at LES he taught kindergarten. He now spends full-time as the school’s ESOL teacher. He’s also the Student Pastor at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Martin. He has been named LES teacher of the year twice and this year he was awarded the title Teacher of the Year for all of Franklin County School System. (Photo by Charlie Eavenson)

Teaching working out fine for TOTY Matthews

By Charlie EavensonStaff Writer LAVONIA – In college, Tyler Matthews says he didn’t know what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.But it appears that God’s plan for the 6’5” student pastor to teach kindergarten has worked out just fine.He was recently named Franklin County Teacher of the Year.
