Early voting for the May 19 primaries will open Monday at the Franklin County Elections and Registration Office in Carnesville. Voters in the primary will have to choose from the ballots for the Republican primary (pictured) and Democratic primary. All local races are on the Republican ballot.

Forum planned Saturday ahead of early voting Monday

From staff reports CARNESVILLE – A candidate forum will be held Saturday ahead of early voting, which starts Monday for the May 19 primaries.Early voting will be held April 27 through May 15 at the Franklin County Board of Elections and Registration Office in Carnesville.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was in downtown Lavonia Friday as part of its investigation into a lengthy standoff between a Lavonia resident and law enforcement officers Thursday. The resident, Alan Joseph Chandler, died after he came out of his home firing a weapon at officers and members of the Georgia State Patrol SWAT Team and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office returned fire, a GBI press release said. Man dies after standoff ends with shootout

From staff reports LAVONIA – A Lavonia man died in a shootout with law enforcement officers Thursday after a standoff downtown.Lavonia Police officers responded to 5 Roberts St. Thursday at about 1 p.m. after a report that a city employee had been assaulted.

CARNESVILLE – It was a beautiful day, in more ways than the weather, for Franklin County Special Olympics Day Thursday. The event kicked off with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. on Jeff Davis Field at Ed Bryant Stadium on the campus of Franklin County High School.
