The Franklin County Middle School seventh grade Cubs won the NEGIAA region championship with a victory Saturday in the title game against Stephens County. Members of the team are Sam Shaver, Isaiah Harris, Elliot Harbin, Patrez Gary, Eli Moore, Knox Whitworth, KeWontae Riley, Drake Nix, Kamryn Kellar, Kamarrian Barnes, Will Swinney, Chase Spears and Laithen Barnes. The team is coached by A.J. Ricci with assistants Keez Roebuck and Dawson Dean.

Parker Martin submitted his resignation Jan. 10 as Franklin County High School’s head football coach.

WATKINSVILLE – Will Ballenger is swarmed by his Franklin County Lion wrestling teammates Saturday after he pinned a Hart County opponent to clinch the FCHS program’s first-ever area duals championship. The Lions defeated Hart County and Stephens County two in the Area 8AAA title and will host two other teams in a state sectional Saturday at the Coliseum on Busha Road. The winner of the sectional will advance to the state duals championship tournament in Toccoa Jan. 21.

Lions seek area title, berth in state competition Saturday

The Franklin County Lions and Lady Lions will begin the Region 8AAA schedule Tuesday at home against Stephens County. Jordan Ardister (No. 13) and Mylan Roebuck (No. 14) will look for more post-game celebrations in region play.

Former Franklin County Lion Keylan Rutledge helped lead the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders to a Hawai’i Bowl win over San Diego State on Christmas Eve.
