CANON – The Canon City Council will meet today at 7 p.m. following the death of long-time Mayor Ray Morgan. Morgan died Wednesday. Mayor Pro Tem Annie Wallace and Council Members Bobby Locke, Dale Garner and Eli Brown issued a press release Thursday announcing his death.
Either Derrick C. Turner of Buford or Bert Rosenberger of Milledgeville will be chosen as county manager on Feb. 9 in a called commissioners’ meeting.

CARNESVILLE – A new Royston Elementary School in Franklin Springs is off the table. “We will not be putting the school in Franklin Springs,” Franklin County School Superintendent Chris Forrer said Tuesday following a called meeting of the board of education.

The Franklin County Board of Education will hold a called meeting Tuesday to discuss the purchase of property for a new Royston Elementary School.
The former McCall Jewelers building in downtown Royston is now known as “The Gem,” an outdoor dining area for The Old Corner Hardware Store. Owner Kelley Tamplin refurbished the building to include picnic tables for those wishing to eat outside and commissioned a mural by her son Reed as part of an effort to make Royston a destination place for young people and couples. Speeding leads to discovery of $200,000 in meth

A traffic stop Monday ended with two arrests and the confiscation of $200,000 worth of methamphetamine. A press release from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies stopped a 2016 Toyota Corolla Monday for speeding.

CARNESVILLE – Franklin County Commissioners plan to name finalists for the next county manager on Jan. 26. Commissioners met for about 50 minutes during a called meeting Monday to narrow down a list of 30 applicants for the manager’s post. Beth Thomas resigned as manager in December.

CARNESVILLE – It looks like Royston Elementary School may move to Franklin Springs. A majority of the Franklin County Board of Education said Tuesday they wanted the school superintendent to pursue property between Highway 145 and Bryant Park Road in Franklin Springs for a new school.
