Shortages in the supply to the Franklin County water system led to a request Monday for customers to conserve water.

A $1 million Appalachian Regional Commission grant to the City of Lavonia will be used to implement a streetscape plan for downtown Lavonia. The city will match the federal money with more than $1 million of its own.
