Raising flags of honor

Those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States were honored Monday with a ceremony at the new Veterans Memorial Plaza at the Franklin County Courthouse. It was the first year for the annual event at the new plaza, which was built this year.
Franklin County commissioners will move their June 7 meeting, which will include a hearing and vote on Pilgrim’s Pride’s plans for a rendering plant, to Lavonia.  The meeting will now be held at the Lavonia Cultural Center.

By Shane Scoggins Publisher   CARNESVILLE – Franklin County commissioners announced Friday that their June 7 public hearing and meeting concerning Pilgrim's Pride will be held at 5 p.m. at the Franklin County Agriculture Center, as was originally planned when the meeting was announced.
Preliminary figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows Franklin County grew by 6.4 percent in the last 10 years, County Manager Derrick Turner told commissioners Tuesday.

Movie films in Carnesville

By Shane Scoggins Publisher   CARNESVILLE – The Franklin County seat went Hollywood Sunday. A production crew spent Sunday shooting scenes for an upcoming movie in the Crestview Heights subdivision and Franklin County Detention Center. The movie, directed by David Nixon Jr.

School board names Colquitt acting superintendent

By Samantha Sinclair Staff Writer   CARNESVILLE — Both the crowd and the superintendent were noticeably absent at Thursday’s Franklin County Board of Education meeting.  By the end of the short meeting, Assistant Superintendent Chuck Colquitt was approved as acting superintendent.
The Lavonia City Council voted Monday to agree to a memorandum of understanding with a housing developer that will provide the developer with tax abatements and other incentives to build 180 units worth $25 million on Ross Place.

By Samantha Sinclair Staff Writer   LAVONIA — Housing is a need in the county, and the Lavonia City Council took a step Monday to encourage one project with a tax abatement. The proposed project is a $25 million, 180-unit workforce housing development on 19.738 acres on Ross Place.
