Carnesville firefighters urge impact fee charge

Lavonia gives initial OK for townhouse development

By Samantha Sinclair Staff Writer   LAVONIA — A new housing project for the area jumped through its first hoop Monday night, as the Lavonia City Council gave an initial approval for annexation and zoning of the project’s property.

Howell honored for 14 years on Lavonia Council

By Samantha Sinclair Staff Writer   LAVONIA — David Howell wanted to serve the community as a city council member right after he first moved here in the 1980s. He loved Lavonia, and wanted to see the city go in the right direction. “I’m just a people person,” Howell said.

Christmas calendar to turn from tree lightings to parades

From staff reports   The Christmas spirit will continue to make its Franklin County debut for 2021 over the next week. The cities of Canon, Royston and Lavonia have each held celebrations for the lighting of their respective Christmas trees.

Renovations ‘brighten up’ city council’s meeting room

By Samantha Sinclair Staff Writer   LAVONIA – Renovations in the meeting room in city hall are complete for now, and the public is welcomed to see the changes at the council meeting Monday night, or any other time they’d like to stop by. “We’re proud of it,” City manager Charles Cawthon said.

Lavonia loses 'larger than life' leader

By Samantha Sinclair Staff Writer   LAVONIA — The crowd gasped before Lavonia’s tree was lit Tuesday night as Mayor Courtney Umbehant shared that longtime Mayor Ralph Owens passed away that afternoon. He was 84 years old.
