LAVONIA – A porcine fugitive has been on the loose for more than a year in the area of the I-85 interchange in Lavonia.

There have been regular sightings and reports of a wayward pig that is apparently living on state-owned right of way just off the southbound ramp of the interstate.

Lavonia Police officials said that the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Georgia State Patrol have tried to entrap or capture the animal but it has been elusive.

“They’ve tried all kinds of stuff,” Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said.

The police department gets regular reports, Administrative Assistant Maria Chitwood said, but is limited in what it can do because the pig stays on state property.

“At this point, he’s the Lavonia mascot,” she said.

The animal is not a wild pig, Chitwood said, and likely fell off a truck in the area at some point.

Reports have been coming in about the animal for more than a year, she said.

Chitwood said she’s not gotten any reports that he the pig has crossed the interstate lanes.
