The Franklin County Lady Lions swept Monroe Area Saturday to earn a spot in the final four of the Region 8AAA tournament and a berth in the upcoming state playoffs.

Now, the team has its eye on a Region 8AAA championship, something that eluded them in their state championship season last year.

The Lady Lions begin play today in the double-elimination 8AAA tournament in Jefferson at Jackson County High School.

Franklin will play Jefferson at 2 p.m.

A win will mean a meeting with either Jackson County or Morgan County at 6 p.m. A loss will mean a 4 p.m. game with the loser of the noon Jackson-Morgan contest.

Updates of the tournament will be on our Facebook page.

Franklin County goes into the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the region. The Lady Lions tied with Jackson County for the regular season championship but the Lady Panthers got the No. 1 seed on a tiebreaker.

The semifinals and finals of the region tournament will be Thursday beginning at 2 p.m., also at Jackson County High School.

The tournament will also serve to seed the Region 8AAA teams for the state tournament. The top two teams from Region 8AAA will host the first round of the state tournament, which is set to begin Oct. 9.

Franklin earned its spot in the region final four by beating Monroe 9-0 and 13-1 in a doubleheader Saturday at FCHS.
