LAVONIA – The Franklin County Citizen Leader was recognized for its photography Thursday when the winners of the Georgia Press Association’s 2024 Better Newspaper Contest were announced at the Jekyll Island Club during the group’s 137th annual convention.
The Citizen Leader won four photography awards for work done in 2023.
Publisher Shane Scoggins won a first-place award for sports feature photograph for a picture of the 2023 Franklin County Lions baseball team celebrating after a home run in the playoffs.
Scoggins also won second place for sports photograph.
Former staff writer Gillian Raese also won two awards.
Raese won second place for photo essay and third place for spot news photo.
“It’s always nice to be recognized for the quality work we strive for each week here at the Citizen Leader,” Scoggins said.
Entries were judged in six divisions based on circulation.
The Franklin County Citizen Leader was judged against other weekly newspapers with circulations of 2,000 to 3,799.
Judging was done by members of the Texas Press Association in February and March.
