An attorney for Pilgrim's Pride notified Franklin County Thursday by letter that the company has withdrawn its requests to rezone property and for a permit to build a rendering plant near Carnesville.

A public hearing and meeting to vote on the company’s applications to rezone more than 100 acres of property near the intersection of Highway 320 and I-85 and for a conditional use permit for the plant was scheduled for Monday at the Franklin County Agriculture Center.

Pilgrim’s attorney Kathryn M. Zickert indicated in the letter that the company would be looking elsewhere as a location for the plant.

“Please be advised that I am hereby withdrawing the above-referenced application. Pilgrim’s Pride will refocus its efforts to build its state-of-the-art plant in a community which welcomes economic development, job creation, expansion of utility lines and other significant investment in the community and its residents,” the letter reads in its entirety.

The proposed plant drew organized opposition from a large group of Franklin County citizens.

Franklin County commissioners will still meet Monday for their regular meeting.

"There will still be a meeting on Monday, June 7th starting at 5 p.m. as there are other business items still to be discussed," a statement on the county's Facebook page said. "The meeting will take place at the original advertised at the Franklin County Ag Center."

More will be reported on this story as it develops.
