ROYSTON – U.S. Highway 29 between Royston and Hartwell will be closed beginning Tueday as contractors work to replace the bridge over Beaverdam Creek.
The Georgia Department of Transportation announced this week that the road, also known as Georgia Highway 8, will be closed beginning Tuesday for “approximately 120 calendar days” during construction of the new bridge.
“The project includes roadway reconstruction on the approaches east and west of the bridge,” A press release from the DOT said. “The project is located approximately 1.7-miles east of Royston in Hart County.”
The new bridge will be 102-feet long and would consist of a two-lane section with 12-foot travel lanes and 8-foot shoulders.
Travelers from Royston to Hartwell will have to find an alternate route.
The DOT’s detour will be for travelers to travel down Georgia Highway 17 to Bowman and then onto Georgia Highway 172 to Hartwell.
“Dates may change due to weather or other factors,” the press release said.
