Umbehant honored by GMRC

LAVONIA – The Georgia Mountains Regional Commission recently presented the 2021 Elected Official of the Year Award to Lavonia Mayor Courtney Umbehant.

Chosen annually by the senior management staff of the GMRC, the award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated leadership, support and vision for the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission.

Umbehant currently serves as Secretary of the GMRC Council, one of three officer positions.

Heather Feldman, GMRC executive director, stated, “Serving the public takes strong determination, bold ideas, commitment, and hard work to succeed in government.  Mayor Umbehant looks for the good in all and does not see obstacles, but rather sees opportunity.  He has taken his duties as a GMRC Council Member to heart and is often a trusted confident both offering his suggestions and support when needed to push the GMRC forward. I am honored to present him this award and proud to call him my friend.”

On receiving this year’s award, Umbehant said, “The GMRC works tirelessly on behalf of our cities and counties and is an invaluable resource for local government. It is an honor to be a part of this organization and a high honor to be presented with this award. Thank you to the management and staff of the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission for selecting me as the 2021 Elected Official of the Year.”
