LAVONIA — Local WoodmanLife representatives worked with Lavonia Boy Scouts Troops 51 and 5351 and Pack 51 to retire American flags at the park’s fire pit Monday night. The flag retirement was part of WoodmanLife’s common bond project of the quarter, with the group collecting and donating six flags for the ceremony. The remainder of the flags retired were collected in the flag drop box beside the Lavonia Fire Department. WoodmenLife is second behind the government in U.S. flag purchases, having provided more than 3.5 million flags to nonprofits, schools and communities. It was the first time local representatives Dale Fowler, Sandra Shepherd and Joy Stovall had attended a flag retirement ceremony. “It’s kind of somber,” Stovall said. “You’re so used to watching flags wave.”
