LAVONIA – The Lavonia Police Department will hold the first of a series of community programs next week.
A remembrance ceremony will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Depot in downtown Lavonia.
The ceremony will commemorate five years since the shooting of then-Lavonia Police Officers Michael Schulman and Jeffrey Martin.
The one-to-two-hour program will include a case study of the incident and the manhunt and aftermath that followed.
Schulman and Martin will speak about their experience.
Future programs are still being planned, but Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said the department will hold at least a couple of citizens’ firearms classes, including one for women, during the year.
The citizens’ firearm classes will be two days, with one day in the classroom and one on the firing range.
Other ideas include a program on scams and a town hall to get input from the public on what is going right and things that need improvement in the department, the chief said.
The department is also seeking ideas for programs the public would like to see.
All the courses will be free.
