Animal shelter to hold groundbreaking

LAVONIA – The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter will hold a groundbreaking March 10 for a new building.

The groundbreaking, to be held at 2 p.m., will be at the shelter at 870 Bear Creek Road in Lavonia.

The shelter plans to build a new structure of approximately 2,900 square feet that will be used solely as a canine adoption facility.

This addition will be funded through grants, donations and fund-raising events.

“This building will house dogs surrendered to our intake area and held there for a sufficient time for an owner to reclaim or the recommended time to ensure that the dog is healthy from infectious disease,” Cherry Reeve, a member of the shelter’s board of directors said.

The new facility will feature indoor runs with outdoor areas for exercise and socialization.

“Not only will this provide additional kenneling space, but will help to contain an infection to one area with the intent that the shelter would have no requirement to be totally closed to the public,” Reeve said.
