Pair wanted in Mexico since 2004 arrested in Lavonia
LAVONIA – Two people wanted for more than 14 years for kidnapping charges in Mexico were arrested Tuesday near Lavonia.
A press release from Franklin County Sheriff Stevie Thomas said that on Oct. 27, 2004, a judge in Michoacán, Mexico, signed a warrant of arrest charging Arminda Espinoza-Albarran, 43, with kidnapping and Jose Mendez-Paniagua, 41, with kidnapping and attempted murder.
On Tuesday morning, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Atlanta Field Office, with assistance from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, arrested Espinoza and Mendez near Lavonia.
Pending extradition, Espinoza and Mendez will remain in ICE custody awaiting a hearing before an immigration judge.
