Highway 17 plans will bypass Lavonia, Canon
While final plans and construction are still years away, preliminary drawings for a four-laned Georgia Highway 17 show bypasses around both Lavonia and Canon.
The plans, discussed Monday by the Lavonia City Council, has an expanded Highway 17 follow its current path for much of the distance between Royston and Lavonia, but has a new road around both cities.
Georgia Department of Transportation plans given to the city of Lavonia show the bypass around Lavonia will begin near the Silo Center.
The new bypass will run along a path west of the city.
The Canon bypass is shorter and runs basically parallel to the current path of 17, only farther west of the city.
The portion that will connect the Canon bypass to the Royston bypass is set to begin construction in 2024.
