The Friends of the Lavonia – Carnegie Library and the Friends of the Royston Library will host a joint membership drive titled “Friends-A-Palooza” Nov. 3 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Bowers House in Canon.

Refreshments will be available at Friends-A-Palooza and door prizes of a free book and a one-year Friends of the Library membership will be awarded.

Both libraries in Franklin County need Friends to help with future fundraisers, book sales and, most importantly, advocacy.

The Friends tell people in the community and state representatives how important libraries are and that we always need more funding and more exposure.

This membership drive is meant to show the community what the Friends have done, what they plan to do and what could be done with more volunteers and support.

A membership in Friends of the Library is $10 per year for either or both branches.

The funds are used to buy new books, new furnishings and provide Summer Reading Program prizes and materials.

Friends members also get first look at book sales.

“We are no longer just a library, but a daycare, a senior center, a computer lab, a study hall, an art room, a science lab, a museum, a job center and a quiet place to relax,” Libraries Manager Maggie West said. “We have evolved and must continue to do so. We cannot do that without your help.”

The Bowers House is at 100 Depot St. in Canon.
