Canon — Canon will dedicate its new ballfield and honor late Mayor Ray Morgan Sept. 24 at 10 a.m.
The ceremony will include speeches by State Rep. Alan Powell and the Rev. Paul Creason of Canon Baptist Church, as well as the reveal of a monument honoring Morgan, who passed away Jan. 27, 2021.
The name of the field will be revealed during the dedication ceremony, Mayor Annie Wallace said.
The field is outfitted with a scoreboard.
Cullen Morgan, city councilman and the late mayor’s son, said it was a great honor for his family, even though his father would have disagreed with being recognized.
“He wouldn’t want people making a fuss over him,” Cullen Morgan said.
He said the ballfield project was very important to his father.
Wanda Morgan shared that her husband wanted children to have a place to go and play.
She said he continuously worked on the ballfield project throughout the entire time he was mayor.
Wanda said he would be happy to see that what he set out to do for the community was accomplished.
“He loved the community,” she said.
The ballfield is on Fowler Street, near the city park and just behind Morgan’s Used Cars.
